What You Need To Know About Baldness

By Gene Minor

Hair, just like our nails, is made up of Keratin. Unlike our nails, hair grows from the second layer of the skin, referred to as the dermis. Once hair grows, this is the beginning of a continuous cycle of growth, shedding and regrowth. What happens is, after a period of active hair growth, the follicle disintegrates and the hair sheds.

After that, a new follicle appears and the whole cycle starts over. The hairs on your head are replaced every two to five years, while eyebrow hair is replaced every four months. Alopecia is a condition that involves hair loss- this condition is also commonly known as baldness.

The hair undergoes a similar cycle for women too. But the hair-fall pattern is not similar to that of men. For men, the hair starts falling at the temples and gradually proceeds to the top of the head, leaving a tuft of hair at the sides and back of the head.

This kind of alopecia is commonly attributed to gensadasdasetics. But, illness can also be the culprit.

If hair loss is caused by an illness, the hair often grows back after the illness is cured. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments associated with some cancers cause baldness in both genders. Hair growth usually resumes once the treatments are finished. Other diseases, especially bacterial infections and illnesses like lupus, planus, and thyroid conditions can also cause hair loss.

There is another disease which can cause hair-fall. It is called 'Alopecia Areta'. The cause of this disease remains a mystery to scientists and the medical profession. This disease causes the hair to fall in large masses that leave many bald patches on the head. Mostly this disease affects the hair on the head only. But sometimes it affects the eyebrows and even eyelashes.

In most of these cases, the hair grows back within a year. The baldness can be cured by several methods. Oral pills, corticosteroid injections and creams containing corticosteroid drugs are the various treatments available to treat baldness. These treatments cannot cure everyone undergoing them.

Baldness is not a serious condition in that it does not cause physical discomfort or harm. But, baldness can definitely be harmful to one's emotional health. Especially when there is little that one can do to stop it from affecting them. With all the treatments which are available, some might find it easier to use false hair/hair replacement items, such as a wig or hairpiece, until the baldness has run its course. - 30305
