Risk Free Hair Straightening: Beat the Split Ends!

By Erica Mate

If you carry out hair straightening at home there is a risk of damage unless you are aware of certain information and take certain precautions.

It could be very annoying when youre not 100% sure that the way you treat your hair is the best for it, isnt it?

Good looking hair is a fabulous asset, yet if not cared for it can deteriorate. A heavy-handed approach with a straightening iron can cause split ends and damage that could take some time for the hair to recover from.

Im going to tell you exactly what to do and how to make sure your hair is not damaged in any way by improper use of straightening tools or by lack of proper protection.

First of all, it is essential to have good tools: A ceramic straightening iron is a must if you are straightening your hair often. A hair dryer with a good strong air flow and not just a hot one, must be used. If you are straightening regularly, say once or twice a week, then you should use a treatment that helps to prevent the hair from being dried out leading to frazzled ends.

Regular deep conditioning of the hair will help to give it a healthier bounce and shine. A recommended product for this is called Bonacure Q10 by Schwazkopf.

After straightening you should use good detangling products and a wide-toothed comb. For the sake of good hair its a good idea to have it trimmed every month and to drink plenty of water.

Before you start using a straightening iron you need to give your hair some protection. I find that the best product for this is Osis Slick flattening liquid and Osis Flatliner.

Apply a little bit of the straightening liquid before blow drying and in between towel drying. Blow dry by taking sections at a time and with a flat brush- it takes a while to master exactly how to straighten accurately but its worth it.

Use a little bit of gel or cream or something to keep it straight and non-frizzy, and shiny. I use the Osis Sparkler for this. I think this product does a very good job in this.
